History of the Berlin Crocodiles
The Berlin Crocodiles were born in June 2001. The club
founders, Johannes Junius and Stefan Voß met through
the
AFLG
Guestbook (Australian Football League Germany) and
decided to make AFL popular in Berlin. They worked together
to rally support using flyers, posters and small advertisements
in local magazines in adition to developing a continuing
relationship with the Australian Embassy in Berlin who
help spread the word.
In September, after a few weeks training, the Berlin
Crocodiles had their first game in Munich for the October
Fest cup (in early September) and in November had their
first home game against the
Frankfurt
Redbacks.
On the 17.10.2001 the Berlin Australian Football Club
e.V. (BAFC) was officially founded and is now officially
recognised as a sporting club. The BAFC is part of the
Berliner Rugby-Group who are a member of the
AFLG.
In 2002, the Berlin Crocodiles have had a successful
season. Since March, training has been twice a week.
As half of the players are from Australia, the positive
development of the Berlin Crocodiles is secure. The
major game locations for 2002 were Frankfurt, Aahus
(Denmark), Düsseldorf and Berlin. On the 1st of
September, the Berlin Crocodiles took part in the Rhein
Cup in Düsseldorf against the Frankfurt Redbacks
and the Düsseldorf Lions and won the first ever
Rhein Cup championship.
The Berlin Media have been curious in the start-up
and development of Australian Football. Articles about
the Berlin Crocodiles have appeared in popular Berliner
newspapers and magazines. The Berlin television channel
SFB brought the crocodiles into the television limelight
and the club has also featured twice on radio. Information
for and about the Berlin Crocodiles in the Media is
available in the
Press
Section.
The popularity of Australias number 1 sport has grown
in Berlin however the goal of a full 18 player team
has not yet been reached. Everyone who is interested
in the sport as a fan or a potential player is welcome
to come to training or to our next game.
