VFL/AFL
Premiers |
| |
| The VFL's
night series competition began in 1956, when a crowd of
32,450 turned out to see South Melbourne defeat Carlton
at the Lake Oval. This remained the grand final venue
until 1972, when the competition was suspened for five
years. Upon resumption in 1977, the grand final was held
at Waverley Park.
From 1988 onwards,
the pre-season competition has begun in February and been
decided before the premiership season begins. The Grand
Final is still played at night, but some matches during
the preliminary rounds are played during the day. |

Wooden
Spoon |
| |
| The dreaded wooden
spoon is 'won' by the team finishing last each
year. Adelaide, Carlton, Fremantle, Port Adelaide and
the West Coast Eagles are the only teams to have never
finished at the bottom of the ladder, while St Kilda have
finished last 26 times. Below are the number of times
each club has taken home the wooden spoon. |

McClelland
Trophy |
| |
From 1951-1990 the McClelland Trophy was awarded to
the club accumulating the highest number of points by
its senior, reserve grade and under 19 teams. With the
move to a one team national competition, the AFL Commission
decided that as from 1991, the trophy would be awarded
to the team finishing on top of the ladder at the end
of the AFL home and away season. The trophy was instituted
to award to recognise the service of Dr Wm. C. McClelland
as a player and club delegate for Melbourne, as well
as an official and VFL President from 1926-1955.
