Berlin Crocodiles Newsletter
The Munich Roos came into this match as clear favourites, with betting agencies around Germany offering odds of up to 5000 to 1 for a Berlin upset. The 46 year old shoe-salesman from Cologne who put 2 euro on us to win, would not be celebrating tonight, the Crocs received yet another record thumping.
The Roos dominated the game from the opening bounce, taking the ball out of the middle with system and purpose and moving. On paper, the Berlin steam was much stronger this week than they were the previous week against Frankfurt. To the credit of the Berlin Crocodiles, the Crocs fielded only two Australians in the team of 14 players against the Munich team which was made up of mostly Australian players. Although the Crocs were simply outclassed, the Crocs players can hold their heads up high for their determined effort throughout the game.
In particular, Jarlath and Benno ran hard, chased and applied pressure throughout the entire match. The Rugby guys: Adam, Sebastian, Marc, Daniel and Adrian all hit the opposition hard and tackled superbly and Marvellous Marvin rucked well all day without a rest. Also worthy of recognition was Chris who did a good job with the kickouts, and the performance of rooky Renee (in his first ever match) and Uwe (in his second match). Well done guys! The final scoreline of 29 goals 17 (191) to 1 goal 4 (10) was quite comprehensive and as a team we certainly have much to improve on. But the basic kicking and handballing skills shown so well by the Munich players can all be learnt with practice, and if we can master these it will make an enormous difference to the outcome of matches.
For one of the bizarre moments of the day we will sacrifice but a few words, for detailed info, come to training. After the match as the sun shined down upon the weary Crocs players who were getting stuck into a big bunch of organic banannas (high in potassium), Marc decided to change into his birthday suit and thus created one of the most unusual sights ever seen at Schiller Park. It wasn’t the prettiest moment in the history of the Crocs however there were no injuries and we are pleased to say that the all of the Crocs in therapy are on their way to a full recovery.
Later in the evening, the Crocs and Roos players headed back to Belushi’s Bar for some quiet beers and a viewing of the official match video. (Munich video-tape all of their matches. A bit too professional for my liking.) Unfortunately the Crocs didn’t play much better on video. Perhaps the Munich people had used the magic of digital video to edit out all our good bits of play. The official presentations were also conducted with congratulations go to Haroon, Marvin and Little Marc for being awarded Berlins best 3 players as judged by the Munich captain. For some reason Marc misunderstood this as an invitation to change back into his birthday suit. He is now off beer for a while and we hope he will be ok. Little Marc, Marvin and Haroon also competed in a boat race (drinking competition) against Munichs best 3 players, it was no surprise that Munich won this (they practice every week! and have you been to the Munich kangaroos’ parties?)
So thanks again go to Andy for his work in the coaching box and on the bbq, Christopher for another fine umpiring performance, the wives, girlfriends and supporters for coming out to watch the match, and Marc and his buddy for ensuring that everyone of us will have horrible nightmares for the next 3 weeks!
And finally… we hope to see as many players as possible coming out to training this Tuesday to work on those skills!!! We have a bye for the next round which the Crocs time to prepare for the Round 7 Home Game on Saturday 30th June against Hamburg. Following this is also the Tri-Nations tournament being held in Berlin on the 7th of July with Germany versus Sweden.
